(Measures against Search Engines)
I have continued to write and upload what I wanted to write since last year. Recently I checked the search sites and found that the title and summary of my home page were bad.
Registration to Search Site
After a home page is uploaded, the owner has to register the home page on one or more search sites so that anyone can find it out.
There are two types of search sites as follows;
- Directory type: The owner has to abide by the classification of directory prepared by the site and to apply the registration of his home page to the site. When the judge of the site allows the registration, his home page becomes searchable by following up the directory tree.
- Key word type: First the owner registers his URL (http://www. ...) to the site at first. Then the search engine of the site automatically comes to his page, gathers necessary data, and adds the data to their database. After that his page becomes searchable by using keywords.
Because my page is difficult to fit the directory type sites, I registered to the key word type sites (advice of a friend of mine.)
Search Site Goo
I searched my page using the title, "Ten years of a retired Japanese," and keywords, Switzerland, Canada, and the UK. (Of course the title is a group consisted of key words.) The result A) by the title and the result B) by the key word were obtained as follows. The following red URL of two No.1 is mine, therefore my home page is certainly registered on this site.

Because my home page was found by using "Ten years of a retired Japanese," this search engine certainly recognized the input words as the key words. But the title written by large fonts was not reflected on the result as the title. This engine definitely recognizes the hidden title in my frame file, which is sandwiched by two tags <title> and </title>, as the title because "MyHomePage" is shown as my title in the result.
In the frames file, the file basically defines only the file names assigned to each frame and the number of frames. I had known I was able to write the hidden title, hidden keywords, and hidden summary on the frame file but I had not thought them important. Because I was frantically making the frame file, I cannot remember why I wrote such hidden title, MyHomePage.
No.2 home page using the frame file is similar to my page. No.5 home page has an effective description. This page uses normal file. The title, "Text of Prof. Iwao", is sandwiched with two tags, <title> and </title>. Her description, "The New Life-styles of Japanese Women" is tagged with <h1>...</h1>. Possibly these tags are useful to be recognized as description. In my case, I used large font for the heading but did not use such tags.
Measures
Anyway I had to improve the hidden title in my frame file. On July 23, 2001, I changed the hidden title, "MyHomePage," with "The life of a retired Japanese." Maybe writing a hidden summary and keywords on the frame file, and sandwiching the heading of the file assigned to the frame with <h1> and </h1> is desirable. I did them at the same time.
Result 1
Since then I checked the search site weekly using the new title and found the following new result on August 24, 2001.
The adopted summary was hidden one in the frame file, not the one in the assigned file. Tags, <h1> and </h1>, seem to be ineffective. And I knew the search engine
really repeats visiting my home page. This was a happy moment for me.1
The life of a retired Japanese
http://www4.justnet.ne.jp/~n11288
I wrote about my pastimes: foreign trips (Switzerland, Canada, the UK), learning English itself, an increase in my knowledge through the learning English, and uploading my home page.
Generally there are two types of descriptions in the html (Hyper Text Markup Language) file. The one can be read by the normal- and html-mode of a browser. The other one cannot be read by the normal-mode. I attach the prefix, "hidden", to the description which normal-mode browser cannot read. Strictly speaking, the title sandwiched between two hidden tags, <title> and </title>, appears on the upper margin of the Internet Explorer. But I write this title as the hidden title here because it does not appear in the body of the page.
Result 2
In a good mood, I searched my home page on other sites using the title, "The life of a retired Japanese." They treated my title as a group of key words removing prepositions and articles. The search was done by "and" connection.
Google (1 of 117,000)
The results are as follows. The category is not suitable. Maybe it was automatically created by the computer. The hidden title and hidden summary appears after the category. Next, the heading and the part of summary written on the right side of the initial screen appears. Further, the URL, which enables the direct access to the file that contains the description of the right screen, is shown.

Summary
1) The above search results are summarised as follows.
Search Site Hidden Title Hidden Keyword Hidden Summary Initial Screen Hits Goo Effective Effective Effective Ineffective 709 Effective Unconfirmed Effective Effective, Stored 117,000 Yahoo Effective Unconfirmed Effective Effective, Short 29,600 Yahoo Japan Effective Unconfirmed Effective Ineffective 430 From the above Table
- The hidden title and hidden summary in the frame file is indispensable. Suitable keywords should be mounted so that anybody can easily find my page.
- Google and Yahoo stores a part or whole of description on my initial right screen. So I have to consider about the keywords on the file assigned to the right frame.
- Google is the most powerful site when I compare the number of hits and the capacity of stored data with the other sites. But when my page is searched, it is probably difficult to hit at high rank on this site.
2) My page appears at the top rank this time. This depends on the fact that my title contains all of the three keywords and/or three keywords are located at the closest position in the description comparing with other pages. Because I know my page well, I can get these results. Otherwise I cannot do that.
3) The next problem is how to choose the title and keywords. I have to return to the starting point: Who are the readers of my page? What can I offer them? It is the basic but difficult proposition.
