ザイフリボク

Amelanchier asiatica


A deciduous tree with grayish brown and longitudinally shallow-fissured bark.

Leaves are alternate, obovate to ovate or oblong, acute or abruptly acuminate at the apex, rounded to subcordate at the base, depressedly serrulate.

Petioles are 1-2cm long, narrowly grooved above.

Flowers in April to May with the leaves on new shoots.

Pomes ripeningblackish purple.

This tree is nearly endemic to Japan, preferring such sunny and rather dry sites as along ridges.

The wood is used for small implements. The tree is planted for ornamental purposes.

Distribution ; Honshu (Iwate to south), Shikoku, Kyushu, Tsushima, Cheju Island
