BATS in Shinshu (Highland of central Japan)

KO-U-MO-RI means bat in Japanese. We can see only insectivoly microbats in Japan main islands. But no one knows their present condition. Maybe industrial deveropments let decrease their habitats. We must research quickly Japanese environments for bats, and for us. This webpage is introduction to bats live in my county Shinshu where is highland and many mountains region in central Japan. Before now, 15 bats of Japanese 33 species ware recorded in Shinshu.

Bat Watching News Shinshu

NAZOKOE visit cherry blossom watching.

NAZOKOE is unknown bat in Japan. Maybe it is Tadarida insignis. We can hear the cruising pulse on our ear. Because its echolocation pulse is 10-20KHZ. NAZO means mystery, and KO-E is voice. This mysterious voice is heard at the ruins of Takato castle which is very famous for spring cherry blossom.

ABURA-KOUMORI Watching

Abura koumori Watching is estalished in 1997 as a new project. We often look Pipistrellus abramus in our town. But no one knows its distribution correctly, our government also. We start collect appearance record in Japan. Pipistrellus abramus's Japanese name is ABURA-KOUMORI. This local name is origin of scientific name.

Nyctalus counting in Matsumoto valley

I know some roosts of Nyctalus aviator in Matsumoto valley. Big trees decreased, and tree holes suitable for bats ware also. Now the bats in this region are guessed under 500 individuals. Nyctalus aviator's Japanese name is YAMA-KOUMORI. Yama means mountain.

Bat banding in Shinshu

We search foraging area in daily behavior and seasonal migration. I use metal banding on bats' wings. And in a part of our research, we use radiotelemetory tracking.

Bats use new built the Norikura Bat House

We built a new bat house last year autumn. Good result came soon. Some species of bats living in Norikura highland are using in this season. Maybe, at least 2 species are bread at 1997 Summer.

      Using ultrasounds detecter, converted sound are like "piroro-piroro-piroro".
      Recievable frequency is in narrow range.

      Using ultrasounds detecter, converted sound are like "butu-butu-butu-butu".
      Sometimes we can hear like conpress pulse like "bububu". This is foraging.
